Jeff's Death Investigations Update - April 6, 2023

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has disclosed that Jeff's Death probe has entered final stages after the DCI Director Mr Mohamed Amin ordered fresh investigations.

"Detectives based at the DCI Homicide department are finalizing their investigations following the death of Jeff Mwathi, 23, who died on February 22, 2023, in unclear circumstances," the DCI wrote.

According to the agency, DCI detectives revisited the scenes and reconstructed events leading to Jeff's death.

Additionally, they exhumed the body and collected new samples for toxicological tests to determine if Jeff had consumed alcohol or other substances before his death.

They also recorded fresh statements from witnesses to gain insights on what happened during the fateful day.

Additionally, they will conduct a fresh autopsy to determine his cause of death.

Similarly, they collected DNA samples from the deceased and persons of interest to determine if he was sexually assaulted as speculated by some.

They also conducted forensic CCTV and digital analysis to establish crucial evidence.

Although the DCI did not disclose the nature of the cyber forensics investigation, it could include phone records to determine the whereabouts of people of interest, or discover others who might not have been known to have been present at the scene.

Nevertheless, the investigation raises questions whether toxicological samples obtained after the victim was potentially embalmed could still provide any crucial  evidence.

DCI Kenya Issues a Statement on Jeff's Death

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has issued a statement on the ongoing probe into the death of Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi, aka Jeff, that occurred on February 22, 2023.

According to a statement posted online, the DCI has completed the first round of investigations, including forensic analysis of the crime scene, review of CCTV footage, and eyewitness interviews.

"Several other DCI Forensic experts assisting the Homicide investigators have also collected crucial evidence and the same are (sic) being analyzed."

The DCI noted that the investigations were entering the second stage, where people of interest would be interrogated, and recommendations would be made to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further action.

"We are in the meantime requesting the public to be patient as we endeavor to establish the circumstances surrounding Jeff’s untimely death," the DCI implored the public.

Meanwhile, many Kenyans registered their dissatisfaction with the investigations, alleging potential coverup by the investigative body.

A few Kenyans had taken to the streets vowing not to let the case go cold and pressing the DCI to expedite the investigation.

Police Shot 2 Alleged Gangsters, recover 1.13 Million and 2 Firearms - Were Suspects Executed?

Police shot dead two alleged gangsters and recovered Ksh 1.13 Million and two stolen firearms.

The duo had allegedly robbed Unaitas SACCO Mununga branch and headed for the hills at Kinyona Forest.

The two were reportedly among a group of six that had earlier robbed police officers off a G3 rifle and an AK 47 submachine gun on February 25, 2023.

The AK47 sub-machinegun was loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) the two were approached by a joint task force made up of police officers from Kiambu and Muranga counties and elite officers from DCI's Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).

The encounter resulted in an exchange of fire where the alleged criminals were fatally shot.

Were two suspects summarily executed by police officers?

However, photographs of the alleged suspects surfaced online, with the duo under police custody before they were later reported to have been killed in a shootout.

Kenyans protested at what they perceived as extra-judicial killings by police officers.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the mysterious deaths of the suspects who were supposedly in police custody before they were alleged to have been killed in a shootout.

The police oversight authority has sent a Rapid Response Team to look into the matter.

“Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action, including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable,” the statement reads in part," said Anne Makori, IPOA, chairperson.

The incident comes months after president William Ruto disbanded the Special Service Unit that was accused of extra-judicial killings.

Several former members are facing charges related to the disappearance of high-profile individuals potentially including high-profile expertriates.

The alleged Muranga executions has also revived calls for justice for Kianjokoma brothers Benson Njiru Ndwiga and Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga.

The siblings, then aged 22 and 19 respectively, were allegedly killed in cold blood by police officers on August 1, 2021.

Six police officers Benson Mputhia, Consolata Kariuki, Nicholas Cheruiyot, James Mwaniki, Lilian Chemuna, and Martin Wanyama were charged with the unnecessary death of the two university students.

Manhunt for the Alleged Nakuru Killer Hubby Thomas Njuguna

DCI detectives in Nakuru are pursuing a man believed to have murdered his wife in cold blood.

On March 3, 2023, Thomas Njuguna, 41, is alleged to have stabbed his wife Ms. Winnie Chepkirui multiple times, leaving her in a pool of blood, before making it for the hills.

The couple is said to have been embroiled in marital disputes before the fateful day that left the deceased with multiple stab wounds on the face and belly.

"Preliminary investigations points out to a dangerous suspect on the run who has been sending death threats to relatives who have stepped in to care for his kids."
