Kenya Kwanza Johnson Sakaja Floors Polycarp Igathe in Nairobi Gubernatorial Debate

July 11, 2022 Nairobi: Kenya Kwanza's Johnson Sakaja debated Azimio's Polycarp Igathe on issues affecting Nairobi residents.

Sakaja started on the wrong foot by arriving late by 20 minutes and failing to apologize, earning himself criticism from both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio supporters.

Sakaja taunted his challenger saying that he had given him an opportunity to score before the match.

"My opponent is used to head starts, and we are here, amezoea kupewa head starts, no need to talk about the headstart, from the government, and so on," Sakaja claimed.

However, Igathe focused on deconstructing Sakaja especially on his academic credentials. Sakaja's academic papers had became one of the most controversial issues during the elections.

However, Sakaja showed his mastery of Nairobi as a politician who has represented the capital city for 10 years as a senator.

Sakaja also criticized igathe for resigning after only six months as the deputy governor of Nairobi. He accused Igathe of enabling the impeachment of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

"If you stuck in office Governor Sonko would not have been impeached, If you stuck in office, maybe you would be the incumbent governor," Sakaja said.

According to preliminary results of a Twitter poll conducted by Citizen TV, 68% of respondents believed that Sakaja defeated Igathe in the Nairobi gubernatorial debate.

Citizen TV was among the key organizers of the debate. The poll received over 40,000 votes.
